Tinnitus Therapy and Treatment

Tinnitus, by definition, is hearing sound when no external sound is present. Most people that suffer from tinnitus describe it as a ringing sound. Tinnitus can also be a hissing sound, buzzing, clicking or roaring. At some point in our lives everyone has briefly experienced tinnitus; after attending a loud concert or being too close to loud fireworks just to name a few examples.

When the tinnitus sensation becomes constant or chronic it becomes difficult to ignore and can impact the quality of your life. According to the the American Tinnitus Association, nearly 40 million Americans suffer from tinnitus, so you are not alone with this condition. Recent studies have indicated that left untreated, tinnitus may be a contributing factor to anxiety, depression and even dementia in older patients.

What causes tinnitus?

Tinnitus has a number of causes; genetics, injury, repeated exposure to loud noises, certain medications and some underlying medical conditions.

What can I do about the ringing in my ears?

The first and most important step you can take is to get a comprehensive hearing examination to provide a working profile of your hearing. If necessary, your primary care physician may order an MRI to rule out any structural reasons for your tinnitus. In our years of working with tinnitus, we have found that it occurs most often in individuals who have hearing loss in the higher frequencies.

Thankfully, technology has come a long way and we are now able to provide you with several options to treat and manage the ringing in your ears. Hearing aids, amplification and the patented Widex Zen therapy have provided remarkable results and greatly improved the quality of our patients lives. We would love to help you manage your tinnitus.
